Filters and what each one narrows

Set the source and geography

The filter rail on Search narrows the matched set and updates its exact count. Catalogue separates institution sites from platform catalogues. Specific platforms nest under Platforms and are included in its count. Institution location narrows providers by province or state and is available when Universities & Colleges is selected. A platform choice clears that location because platform access and direct institutional coverage describe different channels.

Provider chooses one or more named publishers. Provider type narrows by classes such as higher education, companies and industry, nonprofit, government, healthcare, other, or unclassified when those choices are present in the current scope.

Define the offering

Category narrows the subject classification. Credential type uses the credential form captured from the source, with less common forms grouped when needed. Delivery mode selects Online, Hybrid, or In-Person. Skill limits the set to offerings connected to a standardized skill in the filter vocabulary. Price cap keeps offerings at or below the selected published amount.

Facet counts describe courses only. Programs bundle courses that are indexed beside them, so including both in a facet count would double-count part of the market. The matched-set header reports course and program tiers separately. Category and Delivery mode can count one course more than once across their options.

Combine filters deliberately

Several values in one facet use OR logic. Selecting British Columbia and Alberta means either location can match. Different facets use AND logic, so British Columbia plus Online requires both. For supported facets, you can switch from inclusion to exclusion and remove named providers, provider types, categories, or credential types.

Counts beside short vocabularies can remain visible at zero because zero is useful evidence. Long lists hide most zero-count values so the available choices remain scannable. If every active boundary conflicts, the empty state suggests filters to clear and shows how many offerings that change would recover.
